The Analysis of the „Das Experiment” Movie - 2058 Words

The script of the movie Das Experiment was written by Mario Giordanos book Black Box. The book is based on the real events that took place in 1971 and received the name of the Stanford Prison Experiment, organized by the American scientist Philip Zimbardo. The movie reflects many of the real events of the Stanford Prison Experiment, with the addition of the violent and sexual scenes in order to enhance the psychological effect on the audience. In order to conform, the group member must attribute someone as having the legitimacy to lead or influence the groups behavior. The most important feature of compliance is that it is the unwritten code or law of the group and members adhere to the rules to be seen as being part of the group. Sleeping With Alcohol A Substance As An Addiction Essay

What qualifies the continued engagement in an activity or use of a substance as an addiction as opposed to an interest or hobby? In describing her own relationship with her lover, which had been downtrodden at the hands of her partner’s daily ritual with alcohol, Donna Steiner, in her essay Sleeping With Alcohol, reveals the negative effects that alcoholism, or addiction in any form, can have on the life, well-being, and relationships for the agent of the addiction, in this case her partner, as well as those people with whom she is close. While many characteristics are shared between sufferers of various types of addiction, there exist three essential components to all addictions: the detriment that the activity has, the compulsiveness of engaging in the activity, and the futility of the subject’s attempts to stop partaking, all of which can be observed of Steiner’s partner in Sleeping With Alcohol. Our staging of Blood Brothers Essay As the narrator my outfit is primarily black because the narrator is a constant reminder of what is to come in the play and so by wearing only black I reinforce the message of doom, by wearing all black I also dont give anything away about my character and so he remains a rather enigmatic person throughout the play. We know why he is there but we dont know who he is or where hes from. I wear black, straight cut trousers with a white shirt and a fitted black blazer. I also wear a top hat which I use to show my change between characters, when Im the narrator I wear it but when Im another character I carry it or place it on the floor. By doing this the audience receives a very clear signal that Im no longer the narrator, Due to unforeseen circumstances we were not able to have lighting however we had planned what light we would have had, we would have begun with a white light centre stage where the twins lay dead and when the narrator approached them clutching a bible the lighting would turn red to represent the seriousness, I also feel that by using the colour red when the narrator first comes on the audience would being to recognise the narrator as a bad omen, a doom bringer. We would used light colours such as white and yellow for the twins in their early years to represent and symbolize their innocence but as they grow we would add darker colours such as green and blue to show the change and the fading of their innocence up until the final scene where they die in which we would use red lighting because the audience would be able to relate the red back to the narrator and so the audience could blame the narrator for what has happened. Scenes such as the pill scene would have to be in dark colours such as blue to show how the twins lost their innocence and to show how much they have changed since that very first scene with them. For our performance we were intending to play the song kids game however, since no body could download it, we decide to sing the song instead. By doing this I think the song became more personal t5o the characters and so we decided to sing the song again at the end 6to show the irony between the games they used to play the whole things just a game when they were kids and the reality that, when their all grown up, it stops being a game and it all becomes real. We also planned to play the song its my life by Bon Jovi during the scene were Mickey is searching for his pills as we felt that the song represented what Mickey was feeling at the time. The anger, the hurt, the controlling. The props that we intend to use are minimalistic as we feel that having too many props could over power the message of the story because the actors and the audience would get caught up with them and give them more significance than they should have and so, to prevent this, we made sure that the few props we do have are significant. We used a gun and this was important because the gun Mickey is playing with is the same one that he uses to shoot Eddie with later on and we felt this created impact as the audience would be reminded how much has changed since then and now. We also chose to use a bible and a small handful of money because these remind the audience of the superstitious aspect of the play and how Mrs Johnstone practically sold Eddie. This is further emphasised because the narrator has the bible and the money on him at all times. As children they stand closely together and are constantly touching each other however when they become teenagers we can see in the school scene and the cinema scene Lindas attempts to be close to Mickey whilst Mickey is always moving away from her, signifying to the audience that he is uncomfortable with Lindas advances as he is always trying to put distance between them. Another example is the scene between Miss Johnstone and Mrs Lyons where Mrs Lyons stands very closely to Miss Johnstone as she tries to persuade her to giver up her baby which shows that she is trying to be close to her emotionally and yet when she takes the baby she immediately puts distance between them as she feels that that is the best way to protect the secret. She goes about thus by putting physical distance between them and backing away whenever Miss Johnstone approaches her and then even more physical distance by first dismissing her from her jobs and then moving to the countryside. All to keep her away from Eddie.

On Tuesday, November 14, 1995, in what has been perceived as the years biggest non-event, the federal government shut down all "non-essential" services due to what was, for all intents and purposes, a game of national "chicken" between the House Speaker and the President. And, at an estimated cost of 200 million dollars a day, this dubious battle of dueling egos did not come cheap (Bradsher, 1995, p.16). Why do politicians find it almost congenitally impossible to cooperate? What is it about politics and power that seem to always put them at odds with good government? Indeed, is an effective, well run government even possible given the current adversarial relationship between our two main political parties? It would seem that the exercise of power for its own sake, and a competitive situation in which one side must always oppose the other on any issue, is incompatible with the cooperation and compromise necessary for the government to function. As the United States becomes more extre me in its beliefs in general, group polarization and competition, which requires a mutual exclusivity of goal attainment, will lead to more "showdown" situations in which the goal of good government gives way to political posturing and power-mongering. In this paper I will analyze recent political behavior in terms of two factors: Group behavior with an emphasis on polarization, and competition. However, one should keep in mind that these two factors are interrelated. Group polarization tends to exacerbate inter-group competition by driving any two groups who initially disagree farther apart in their respective views. In turn, a competitive situation in which one side must lose in order for the other to win (and political situations are nearly always competitive), will codify the differences between groups - leading to further extremism by those seeking power within the group - and thus, to further group polarization. In the above example, the two main combatants, Bill Clinton and N ewt Gingrich, were virtually forced to take uncompromising, disparate views because of the very nature of authority within their respective political groups. Group polarization refers to the tendency of groups to gravitate to the extreme of whatever opinion the group shares (Baron & Graziano, 1991, p.498-99). Therefore, if the extreme is seen as a desirable characteristic, individuals who exhibit extreme beliefs will gain authority through referent power. In other words, they will have characteristics that other group members admire and seek to emulate (p. 434). Unfortunately, this circle of polarization and authority can lead to a bizarre form of "one-upsmanship" in which each group member seeks to gain power and approval by being more extreme than the others. The end result is extremism in the pursuit of authority without any regard to the practicality or "reasonableness" of the beliefs in question. Since the direction of polarization is currently in opposite directions in our two party system, it is almost impossible to find a common ground between them. In addition, the competitive nature of the two party system many times eliminates even the possibility of compromise since failure usually leads to a devastating loss of power. If both victory and extremism are necessary to retain power within the group, and if, as Alfie Kohn (1986) stated in his book No Contest: The Case Against Competition, competition is "mutually exclusive goal attainment" (one side must lose in order for the other to win), then compromise and cooperation are impossible (p. 136). This is especially so if the opponents are dedicated to retaining power "at all costs." That power is an end in itself is made clear by the recent shutdown of the government. It served no logical purpose. Beyond costing a lot of money, it had no discernible effect except as a power struggle between two political heavyweights. According to David Kipnis (1976, cited in Baron & Graziano, 1991), one of the negative effects of power is, in fact, the tendency to regard it as its own end, and to ignore the possibility of disastrous results from the reckless use of power (p. 433). The concept and definition of leisure The word leisure is normally attributed to an individuals free time and what they choose to do during that time. Every individual at some stage in their life will participate in some form of leisure, whether it be shopping, travelling, playing sport or just relaxing. Participation must be by choice in order to be considered leisure. Throughout this essay I am going to identify and explain the different types of leisure and why individuals participate with reference to relevant academic literature. Leisure as a concept is not new, throughout history there has always been examples of leisure. If you think back to the time of ancient Rome, people enjoyed watching and in some cases taking part in the activities held within the Coliseum. Furthermore as you move through history the examples continue; Jousting and banquets in the middle ages, all the way up to what we define as leisure activities today, shopping, participating in sport etc (Pearson, 2008). Whats important to point out is the change in perception of what leisure actually is now, compared to what it was before. During the late eighteenth and nineteenth century Britain went through a massive economic change. Otherwise known as the industrial revolution, this period changed what we would define leisure as today (Bull et al, 2003). For so many people, their nature of worked changed drastically, both in terms of what they did and where. This change enabled social class to be born, and with it increased wealth. This new fou nd wealth enabled new technologies which in turn would allow new forms of leisure (2003). Trying to define leisure is often difficult; this is due to the many different forms leisure can take. Bull, Hoose and Weed, (2003) propose four approaches to define leisure. These are leisure as time, leisure as an activity, quality of leisure and personal attitude (p32). Most people work long stressful hours during the day, leisure time is often dictated by the time we are left with after working and earning money. However necessities such as sleeping, eating and personal hygiene all eat into what we define as leisure time. Under the leisure as time approach, work and leisure can be perceived as being in opposition, with one (usually work) limiting the other (p33). When it comes to activity based approaches, as the name suggests, this approach sees leisure as engaging in activities that one would do in their free time, such as shopping, playing recreational sport etc. The quality of leisure and personal attitude go hand in hand with the previous approaches. If the participant is ha ving fun their quality of leisure is improved, the opposite can be said if their attitude is negative. Its important when looking at why people participate in leisure, that these 4 approaches are taken into account. As mentioned above, leisure and work are often seen to be in opposition with each other; however that is not always the case. More and more businesses are seeing the benefits leisure can have on staff productivity and happiness. This year alone an estimated  £1.67 billion was spent on leisure activities for staff at work (Groom, 2010). That equates to 20% of all spending on expenses last year. This view is reinforced by companies partnering with leisure based businesses such as activity day planners and health clubs to offer staff a range of benefits and discounts in order to increase their leisure quality. In addition to investing in leisure for staff, businesses as a whole take part in leisure also. Sponsorship for leisure events was estimated to be around $45.2 billion last year (IEG Global Sponsorship Expenditure Reports, Cited in Sponsormap, 2009). The main concept to explore when asking why people participate in leisure is what motivates them to do so. Under ideal circumstances, the benefits from participating in leisure are numerous. As it covers such a broad range of activities, leisure allows an individual to do what they want. Linda Nazareth (Cited in Alboher,2008) provides an example of a woman who works a stressful 6 day week. By incorporating a small amount of leisure into her routine, she felt happier at work, and felt her interactions with others outside work also greatly improved. Further to this studies show that physical based leisure, such as exercise or recreational sport have a positive effect on ones wellbeing. This is due to a combination of psychological factors as well as raised endorphin levels (The Reality of the Runners High, 2008). However, an individuals leisure can often be impacted by numerous external factors such as age, race, income and gender. William R. Burch, Jr. (2009) highlights how social class (income) has an effect on what activities an individual can take part in. Activities such as going sailing, although not exclusive to upper class, is more likely to be available to than someone who is lower class. In addition an individuals gender can also affect their free time. Roberts (2010) cites a recent international survey that shows men have half an hour more leisure time every day than women. In addition, geography also plays a key role. In the same study, figures showed that the half an hour advantage men have over women in the UK, compared to 38 minutes in the US, 33 in France, 50 in Belgium, 22 in Germany and 80 in Italy. Persons surroundings similarly can limit their participation in leisure. One could argue someone who is retired will have the most leisure time out of all socio economic groups. This however is not always the case. Just as before, location has a major role on leisure, not just internationally but also locally. As Bull et al (2003) describes behavioral norms and expectations of what someone who is retired is able to do, can in fact limit what it is available to them. Further to this, social expectation can encourage social isolation and disengagement. All of these things contribute to having a negative effect on an individuals participation. Government funding can also have an effect. If the facilities arent available, what an individual may want to do as activity based leisure may not be possible. On the flip side, if funding is there the quality of leisure available to individuals is greatly improved and in general so is participation. This highlights how; at least in terms of activity based leisure, opportunities can sometimes be better for some more than others. As shown, although leisure is subjective, external factors often have a role to play in the choices an individual makes. When answering why people participate in leisure, the answer is obvious. As William H. Davies said What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare? (Cited in, Khurana 2009). Life is too short to have nothing but worry. People participate in leisure to escape from the hectic lives they have to live. Song Of Solomon :: essays research papers

From Beginning to End Toni Morrison begins her novel Song of Solomon in a very unconventional way. Instead of introducing a setting or characters, she retells an incident that without further reading is for the most part incomprehensible. As readers we notice later on in the story the references made throughout the book that relate back to the introductory pages. Some of the main themes such as oral traditions, naming, and especially flight are introduced in the first six pages and are further developed in a very similar format throughout the book. One of the outstanding themes, oral tradition, is used to retell events throughout the book in a manner consistent with the beginning. On the first page we are introduced to an insurance agent by the name of Robert Smith. We shortly thereafter learn that he will "fly" form the top of Mercy Hospital. On the Wednesday of his flight a group of fifty people gather around the building to witness this event. While waiting for his "flight" or jump a woman in a contralto voice begins to sing the words "O Sugarman done fly away/ Sugarman done gone/ Sugarman cut across the sky/ Sugarman gone home…"(6) This lady simply describes Robert Smith's flight "home" which we later learn is really him committing suicide. Much later on in the book Milkman is listening to a group of children singing "O Solomon done fly away/ Solomon done gone/ Solomon cut across the sky/ Solomon gone home."(3) In this song Sugarman, or Robert Smith, is replac ed by Solomon, or the Great Grandfather of Milkman. The song describes his "flight" from Shalimar, his home town, and the events that happened after his "flight." In general, oral traditions are used in this book to retell past events for both our understanding and for the characters. They take the form of song, story, and fairy tale and are very important to the meaning of the story because they are a major medium of narration. Naming is utilized throughout the book for the purpose of creating identification and symbolism for the characters and places. On page four a brief description is given about the history of Mains Ave., or Not Doctor Street., as called by the Southside community. It is called Not Doctor Street. because a prominent black doctor had once lived there, and the people living there always referred to it as Doctor Street.

Relationship between Humans and Nature Essay

The relationship between humans and nature is an important topic in which many people contribute ideas to and have done studies on. It is important for people to see that nature is a necessity and that we are responsible for protecting it. In essays and an article, John Steinbeck, Lynn White, Peter Kahn, Rachel Severson, and Jolina Ruckert discuss their beliefs and information they have found to be true about humans and nature living together. In the article â€Å"Americans and the Land†, John Steinbeck talks about the American settlers’ impact on the land. He states that the relationship between humans and nature used to be one of settlers living with or against nature, but has over time come to humans living on or from the land. Steinbeck writes his feelings of humans being very irresponsible in their use of land back in a time when they thought there was an abundance of resources. He writes that people â€Å"burned the forests and changed the rainfall; they swept the buffalo from the plains, blasted the streams, set fire to the grass† (Steinbeck). During the time of the Indians, humans attacked and defended themselves without giving thought to the damage they were causing to their environment around them. To go along with how little Americans thought about the environment, Steinbeck addresses how people went land-mad. Because they had so much of it, â€Å"They cut and burned the forests to make roo m for crops; they abandoned hyknowledge of kindness to the land in order to maintain its usefulness† (Steinbeck). The idea of conservation didn’t much start until after engines and heavy mechanical equipment were in full use. And even since conservation and people finding awe and beauty in  the nation’s national parks, most people don’t think twice about using engines and machines to keep us warm or cool, give us light, or transport us quickly. In response to this essay, I do have to agree that in the past people did not know about the damage they were causing on the earth. However, I disagree with Steinbeck when he says that people do not think twice about using all available technology. I know that through conservation efforts, most everyone is very aware of the impact they have on the environment. Although people are not as in tune with nature as the Native Americans were, I think we could learn from them and appreciate and take more responsibility for nature. Lynn White, Jr.’s essay â€Å"The Historical Roots of Our Ecological Crisis† addresses the relationship between humans and nature by bringing up the issue of what Christianity tells people about their relationship with the environment. It is interesting that White brings up the component of religion in how people treat nature because it is a huge aspect that oftentimes doesn’t get talked about much. White states that Christians believe that God gave them dominance over nature and that it was given to serve man. Because of this dominance that we have, people feel indifferent about exploiting nature and using it to serve themselves. Although I know this is true and is found in Genesis, I believe God intended it differently. I believe that just as God has ultimate rule over the earth and exercises his authority with loving care, he expects humans to do the same with the environment. God was careful in how he made the earth, and He wants us not to be careless and wasteful in how we take care of it. Although, I do agree that this mindset is a problem and has been a problem, so the best way to combat this is to teach Christians to dig deeper in to God’s word to figure out what exactly He means when he says something like that. Peter Kahn, Jr., Rachel L. Severson, and Jolina H. Ruckert discuss the impact on humans of how technological nature is coming to replace actual nature in the essay. In the essay, they come to the conclusion that this replacement causes changes in the physical and psychological well-being of the human species. Kahn, Severson, and Ruckert state that nature is imperative to have in human lives. The authors did a study in which they found that simply  looking outside of a window reduces heart rate which in turn reduces stress. Near the end of the essay, the authors discuss the issue of Environmental Generational Amnesia. This is a condition that humans may face in which, because of â€Å"adapting gradually to the loss of actual nature and to the increase of technological nature, humans will lower the baseline across generations for what counts as a full measure of the human experience and of human flourishing†(Kahn, Severson, and Ruckert, 37). In a study, they figured out that technological nature is better than no nature at all. And they also know that humans have an evolutionary need to affiliate with nature, so we either have to adapt to technological nature, or go extinct. The authors know that talking to people about these environmental issues is becoming harder as most people aren’t aware of or simply don’t believe that they are a problem. I think that this was a very important study to do and shows people the importance and necessity of going out into nature. The relationship between humans and nature is important to everyone because we really can’t escape the fact that we are living together. Knowing the history of why nature is so important to humans can help create a sense of responsibility for its well-being which in turn should unite people to try to make a difference in how we are treating it and using current technology. Because of Kahn, Severson, and Ruckert we now know that nature is something that humans innately need and that increases our health. Reading the ideas and conclusions of these authors about this topic has made me wonder about what my own stance on nature is, how my faith effects that, and if I am substituting technological nature for real nature. Connector Words Every Italian Student Should Learn â€Å"I like to go to the beach. I like to read. The books I like to read are mystery novels. The other books I like to read are romance novels.† While you are sure to get your message across using a variation of the sentences above, you’ll also feel stilted, uncomfortable in what you’re saying because it doesn’t feel like something you would say normally. This is why students in the beginning stages of learning hesitate to speak to natives. They feel incompetent like they’ve regressed 35 years and that makes it harder for them to enjoy having conversations. While there are a variety of techniques you can use to make your conversations more fluid, and therefore increase your confidence, one of them is to learn connector words or words that connect two separate sentences together. These could be conjunctions, like â€Å"and† or â€Å"but†, or they could be adverbs, like â€Å"also† or â€Å"then†. Below are eight of those words that are critical for every beginner student to know in order to have conversations that feel less awkward and more natural. 1. While obstructive uropathy can occur in all age groups, in relation to the following case study that is about a 77-year-old patient, not all the causes are relevant. Bladder dysfunction may be secondary to bladder neck obstruction. In adults, urinary tract obstruction is due mainly to acquired defects; pelvic tumors, calculi, and urethral stricture predominate. Schistosoma haematobium and genitourinary tuberculosis are infectious causes of ureteral obstruction. Obstructive uropathy may also result from extrinsic neoplastic or inflmmatory disorder (Goldfarb, S., 2008). Pathophysiology: Myocardial infarction generally occurs when coronary blood flow decreases abruptly after a thrombotic occlusion of a coronary artery previously affected by atherosclerosis. Slowly developing, high-grade coronary artery stenoses do not usually precipitate myocardial infarction (MI) because of the development of a rich collateral network over time. Instead, MI occurs when a coronary artery thrombus develops rapidly at a site of vascular injury. This injury is produced or facilitated by factors such as cigarette smoking, hypertension, and lipid accumulation. In most cases, infarction occurs when an atherosclerotic plaque fissures, ruptures, or ulcerates and when conditions favor thrombogenesis, so that a mural thrombus forms at the site of rupture and leads to coronary artery occlusion. Histologic studies indicate that the coronary plaques prone to rupture are those with a rich lipid core and a thin fibrous cap. Myocardial infarction is defined as the death of heart mu scle resulting from severe, prolonged ischemia. It usually involves the left ventricle. Most MIs are confined to the distribution of a single coronary artery and are designated as anterior, anteroseptal, lateral, and posteroinferior. Multiregional infarcts also occur. Myocardial infarctions are designated as subendocardial or non-Q-wave when the necrosis is limited to the inner half of the ventricular wall or transmural or Q-wave when the necrosis involves not only the inner half but significant amounts of the outer half of the ventricular wall. The electrocardiographic (ECG) correlates are the ST segment elevation with Q-wave pattern for transmural infarcts and the ST segment depression without Q-wave pattern for subendocardial infarcts. Between 1881 and 1914 about 2,370,000 Jews fled from poverty and oppression, especially from Trarist Russia notorious for its violent anti- Jewish mobs and pogroms. A great number of these Jews reached the United States and a small minority would establish the first modern Jewish settlements in Palestine. By 1924 the United States had placed strict limits on immigration and the number of Jews admitted was drastically decreased. Other countries soon followed suit and Jews desiring to emigrate or flee from the Nazis found themselves faced with sealed boarders throughout most of the world in the 1930’s. Foods: the Jews have a set of laws about the food they can and cannot eat, these laws are called Kashrut, and a food that is not in accordance with the Jewish law is called Treif. In the Kashrut law, there are prohibitions to consume species (such as pork and most insects), the mixtures of meat and milk, and the commandment to slaughter mammals and birds according to a process known as Shechita. Most of the basic laws of Kashrut are from the Torah’s books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy. The Torah does not state the reason for most of the Kashurt laws, but for every law that the Kashurt has each one is biblically written in the bible. Some of the Jewish favourite foods include the following; Babka which is a chocolate – filled challah (egg) bread. Bagel is another favourite Jewish food that is boiled and baked yeast bread. Bialy which similar to bagel, filled with onions and other ingredients there is also Brisket it is a raised meat from the chest area of a cow. Challah is another favourite food it is braided egg bread, Charoset is an apple and nut dish generally served at Passover. Cholent/ Chamin are a slow- cooked stew meat, potatoes, beans and barley. Another favourite dish is Chopped liver, Chrain and pickled horseradish. Farfel is small pellet- shaped egg pasta, used in dishes like kugel. Goulash is a meat stew matzaball soup, and last but not least the Jews love to drink Chicken soup on Friday and Saturday nights. Community events: the Jews have their Synagogues where they have their Jewish celebrations. The Jewish community also celebrates Passover, when the Jews celebrate Passover they are not allowed to use any electricity, and they light candles. The Hanukah is the festival of lights; they also celebrate the Rosh Hashanah which is the Jewish New Year.

The Expectancy Theory Of Motivation And Company X Management Essay Company X produces a line of audio products for the industry professional and prides themselves on the efforts to provide the highest quality available. Furthermore, the company touted high production standards while attaining their goals. Implementation of a newly-designed production process to enable employees to achieve their production goals occurred and their efforts have not been successful. Observations have included a lack of effort to master the process, deficiency in reaching those goals by those who have mastered it, and a lack of concern regarding goal achievement from individuals who are regularly top producers. Through interviews and informal conversations that were conducted, employee concerns were expressed and the result has been a breakdown in the relationships and components in the expectancy theory of motivation. The attitude of Company Xs production staff and the lack of motivation to complete goals is a direct result of a breakdown in the relationships within th e expectancy theory of motivation. Building the Expectancy Theory of Motivation Definition Victor Vrooms expectancy theory of motivation relates that employees within an organization will be motivated when they hold certain beliefs to be true. The strength of a tendency to act in a certain way depends on the strength of an expectation that the act will be followed by a given outcome and the attractiveness of the outcome to the individual (Robbins Judge, 2007). The theory is comprised of three relationships, or variables, that behave much like a chain. When all three are successfully satisfied, then motivation is fully achieved. When one of the relationships is broken or out of sync, then it is not. The result is a combined lack of efficiency, minimum effort, and no goal attainment. Component 1: Expectancy Expectancy is built upon the belief that effort exerted will beget recognition of favorable performance. Several factors can interfere with this piece of the motivation equation. These variables include the belief that a worker has the skills and ability to perform their tasks successfully, how difficult the goals are to achieve and where they fall in relation to the workers expectations, and whether there is any control over their performance. For example, if a departments members share the belief that no matter how hard they work, the likelihood of getting a good performance appraisal is low, then motivation will be low due to a low level of expectancy (Robbins Judge, 2007). Component 2: Instrumentality Instrumentality is defined as the belief that if a person meets or exceeds expectations, then they receive a greater reward than those who do not. Instrumentality will be low if the rewards follow all levels of performance with no distinction between what is acceptable and unacceptable. It is influenced greatly by the trust employees have in their leaders and the likelihood that the promises of reward for good performance is believable. Another factor that determines the level of instrumentality present is demonstrated when the workers do not trust the leaders, yet have the ability to control the rewards system through another means. This control raises instrumentality. Policies also affect instrumentality; the formal documentation of pay and other rewards and benefits contributes to raising levels of instrumentality. Component 3: Valence The third component within the expectancy theory of motivation is valence. Valence is the level of value that an individual places on the rewards as a function of their needs, goals, and values. The employees preferences will determine the level of valence present for motivation. If the worker desires a certain reward but receives another, the level of valence will be lower. Higher levels of valence are present when the understanding of the individual employees goals are understood by their leader and are then considered along with the relationship between their efforts and performance. Good effort equates to good performance when a strong relationship is present (Robbins Judge, 2007). Correcting the Motivation Problem Company X is experiencing dysfunction within the expectancy theory of motivation and thusly, motivation is low. The workers are not motivated to expend the extra effort to meet the high standards and production goals as a result. Expectancy is low, as are the levels of instrumentality and valence. Correcting these problems is achieved by addressing concerns to raise the levels of these three variables. Raising Expectancy Levels Expectancy levels at Company X are suffering. The employees do not put any extra effort into mastering the new production process and those who have done so are not putting forth the effort to achieve goals as the company has directed. Some of the employees stated that they cant be successful because they do not believe they have the skills to do so. Suggestions to correct these problems would include providing extra training time to enable the employees to gain the hand dexterity they believe they are lacking. This would boost their confidence in the new process and give them the tools to achieve the new goals while fostering the belief that the goals are realistic to meet. Boosting their skills and ability to complete the tasks successfully leads to higher performance and also returns control of their perceived performance levels back to the employees. Raising Instrumentality Levels Instrumentality levels are faltering at Company X as well. In Supervisor Bs informal conversations with Supervisor As employees, it is noted that there is no difference in salary increases for workers who meet departmental goals and those who do not. Workers feel as if they are resigned to the rewards system currently in place and they dont see a difference in salary increases or bonuses based on merit. Recognition is therefore non-existent, and the reward for all employees regardless of performance sends the wrong message. Workers do not have to meet goals to receive rewards and they are not motivated to work to attain the higher standards. In fact, salary is only affected if performance is very slow. Because the employees do not feel the recognition for a job well done co-exists with more stringent guidelines for when a poor job is done, they do not put forth the extra effort. This relationship in the expectancy theory is broken. An improved system of handling performance appraisals needs to be implemented. Ideally, it would better recognize those individuals who are putting in extra efforts to ensure that goals are being met while providing feedback for low-performers on areas for improvement. Employee incentives like raises and bonuses would be contingent on meeting or exceeding certain criteria. In restructuring, use performance appraisals, or individual performance in tandem with departmental and production goals to better challenge and reward the workers. A low performance appraisal and poor or mediocre performance would not be rewarded at the same levels as those with high-scored performance appraisals and above average production. By creating a tiered bonus system, the bonuses would be larger and create a desire to attain that level of reward. Once this occurs and is formally documented within the company policies, instrumentality levels rise and are corrected because confidence and trust in their lead ers would be restored. Raising Valence Further discussions with Supervisor As employees uncovered a break in the third piece of the expectancy theory of motivation, valence. The rewards offered by the company do not meet the personal goals of the workers. The bonus offered to employees is too small after taxes and the workers perception is that it is not worth their effort; after taxes come out of their bonus, overtime pay surpasses the amount a bonus would provide. This information explains yet another key breakdown in the expectancy theory of motivation. The system is in need of restructuring so that the bonus meets the personal goals of the production workers. The Whats in it for me? question needs a suitable answer that does this. If an employee is interested in a promotion, bonus, raise, or otherwise, its important that their feedback is taken into consideration in offering a reward that has personal value for the workers. Boosting the valence level is satisfied and once the variables of value, needs, goals, and preferences are met, motivation will increase. Conclusion The problem is three-tiered but in working within the three relationships and by breaking down each piece, the leaders at Company X can boost motivation by raising the three levels of expectancy, instrumentality, and valence. By following a checklist of issues to address, arising from the theory itself, and by bestowing rewards in an appropriate fashion, the leader is enabled to adopt [an] influence strategy that enhances levels of personal motivation (Zerbe et al, 2001). Because an employees expectancy her or his judgment about the attractiveness and probability of a prospective reward strongly influences that persons willingness to take on a new task, the result will be more effort expended by the workers to meet goals they perceive as attainable (Newstrom, 2007).
